ABLAJ is proud to partner in honouring the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy at the Merchant Navy Veterans Day of Remembrance

This important event pays tribute to the sacrifices made by the Canadian and Allied Merchant Navy, American Merchant Marine Veterans, and modern-day seafarers who have shaped the course of history and global trade.

Why Attend?

This ceremony will not only honour the courage and resilience of Merchant Navy veterans during WWII but will also highlight the crucial role that seafaring continues to play in today’s world economy. Join us at the National War Memorial to stand with veterans, dignitaries, and fellow Canadians in remembering those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.

The Impact of the Merchant Navy

During World War II, the Merchant Navy made over 25,000 dangerous voyages across the Atlantic, facing relentless attacks and extreme conditions. Their commitment was vital to ensuring that Allied forces received the supplies needed for victory. More than 2,199 Canadian Merchant Navy seamen lost their lives, and today we remember their sacrifices and bravery.

Special Guests and Highlights

  • Tributes from Leaders: Hear moving messages from leaders like Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other global dignitaries who honour the contributions of these heroes.
  • Ceremonial Salute: The ceremony will feature a solemn salute to those who served, alongside an acknowledgment of the ongoing contributions of today’s seafarers in ensuring global security and prosperity.
  • Reception: Following the event, attendees are invited to a reception at D’Arcy McGee’s Pub, located at 44 Spark Street, where we can continue reflecting on the legacy of the Merchant Navy.

Why It Matters Today

Today, over 90% of the world’s trade is carried by sea, making the work of seafarers indispensable. This event is not just about remembrance—it’s about recognizing the ongoing efforts of those who keep our global economy moving. Modern seafarers operate in harsh conditions, facing dangers like piracy and war zones, all while ensuring that essential goods reach every corner of the globe. This ceremony will honour the past while reinforcing our collective responsibility to support these individuals today. Increasing participation in commemorative events like this strengthens our shared memory and commitment to the values of peace, freedom, and democracy.

We hope to see you there as we commemorate these heroes and their enduring legacy.
